An injury can interfere with an employee’s ability to work. When a worker’s employment opportunities have been impacted by an injury, a Functional Capacity Evaluation can be beneficial. This evaluation objectively determines a worker’s strength, endurance, speed, flexibility, and physical effort when carrying out a variety of real and simulated tasks.

A functional capacity evaluation and the resulting report is a powerful tool in medical, insurance, legal, and worker’s compensation environments. Over the course of this evaluation,clients receive a better understanding of their abilities and limitations, determine the best parameters for returning to work, obtain objective information for disability settlements, and discover any potential rehabilitation services that may help in transitioning back into employment. All of these benefits help employees return to work safely and reduce the risk of additional injury.

Our Process for Functional Capacity Evaluation

A functional capacity evaluation is a comprehensive physical test. It takes about a full day to complete an FCE. Generally, our evaluators will take about four to six hours to test an employee on a variety of real and simulated tasks. Additional time is needed to prepare each report.

We use a variety of evidence-based methods to determine an employee’s ability to return to work. These generally include a musculoskeletal evaluation, work simulation testing, and clinical evaluations to determine an employee’s:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull
  • Hand strength and dexterity
  • Reaching, handling, and fine motor manipulation
  • Climbing and balancing ability
  • Ability to carry out repetitive tasks
  • Tolerance for various postures, including sitting, standing, and walking

After an FCE is complete, we submit a clear, comprehensive report to the parties who requested the evaluation. If needed, we will also make recommendations for rehabilitation resources that may help ease the transition back into employment.
